2024
February, 2024 Team KAIST awarded 2nd Place Winner in MBZIRC 2023

Team KAIST, led by students from the labs MORIN (of Prof. Jinhwan Kim) and USRG (of Prof. Hyunchul Shim), and with PABLO AIR as a partner, won the 2nd Place Winner position in the MBZIRC Maritime Grand Challenge, an international robot competition. Total 18 students from the aforementioned labs were led by the student leaders Sol Han and Haggi Do of the MORIN lab to achieve the automated mission accomplishment via USV-UAV integrated system in maritime environment.

Feb, 23, 2024 Master student Eunghyun Kim was awarded Most Outstanding Paper Award from KRoC 2024

A paper entitled “Motion planning for self-driving mobile robots in crowded spaces” has been awarded as an Most Outstanding Paper Award from Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference (KRoC) held in Pyeongchang, Feb. 21-23, 2024.

June, 2023 Master student Donghyun Kim was selected to participate in OCEANS'23 Student Poster Competition.

A paper entitled "Mission Planning for Collaborative Operations of Autonomous Marine Systems" was selected to participate in the MTS/IEEE OCEANS'23 Student Poster Competition held in Limerick, Ireland, June 5-8. The conference covered their registration fees and all travel expenses during the conference days.

June, 23, 2022 Ph.D. Student Kyungseo Kim was awarded Outstanding Paper Award from ICROS 2022

A paper entitled “Action Sequence Planning for Efficient Mine Detection Using Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles” was awarded as an Outstanding Paper Award form 37th Annual Conference of the Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems held in Geoje, June. 22-24, 2022.

May, 13, 2022 Ph.D. Student Sol Han and M.S. Student Jungwoo Han were awarded Outstanding Paper Award from KRoC 2022

A paper entitled “Multiagent SLAM and Path Planning for a Search Mission in Indoor Post-Disaster Environment” was awarded as an Outstanding Paper Award from Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference (KRoC) held in Pyeongchang, May. 11-14, 2022.

Jan., 18, 2022 Ph.D. Student Jonghwi Kim was awarded Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award from KSOE 2021

A paper entitled "Multi-sensor fusion for Autonomous Navigation Experiment in Pohang Canal" was awarded as an Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award from the 2021 Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Busan, Oct. 21-22, 2021.

A paper entitled "Self-supervised Depth Estimation using a Monocular Camera in Maritime Environments" was awarded as an Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award from the 2020 Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Gangneung, December. 2-4, 2020.

Dec., 03, 2020 Ph.D. Student Changyu Lee was awarded Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award from KSOE 2020

A paper entitled "Model Predictive Control for Automatic Berthing of a Twin-Propeller Twin-Rudder Ship" was awarded as an Outstanding Student Paper Presentation Award from the 2020 Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Busan, July. 22-23, 2020.

Jul., 03, 2020 Korean Federation of Science & Technology Societies Best Paper

A paper entitled "Behavior-based Control Considering the Interaction Between a Human Operator and an Autonomous Surface Vehicle" was awarded as a Best Paper Award from 30th Korean Federation of Science & Technology Societies Best Paper Award.

Dec., 06, 2019 Virtual RobotX (VRX) Competition 1st place

The first Virtual RobotX (VRX) Competition, sponsored by U.S. Office of Naval Research, took place in 2019. A total of 17 teams from 9 countries were participated in the competition, representing Asia, Australia and the United States of America. After a year-long hard work, our team finally won the first place. July., 26, 2019 MORIN-HERO Joint Summer Workshop

MORIN & HERO Lab (POSTECH) had a joint summer workshop at Gyeongju from July. 25 to 26. We discussed the research of each lab and future works.

June., 20, 2019 Master student Keunhwan was selected to participate in OCEANS'19 Student Poster Competition.

A paper entitled "Semantic Segmentation of Marine Radar Images using Convolutional Neural Networks" was selected to participate in the MTS/IEEE OCEANS'19 Student Poster Competition held in Marseille, France, June 17-20. The conference covered their registration fees and all travel expenses during the conference days.

April., 19, 2019 Ph.D. Student Junwoo Jang won the excellence prize in the Student Poster Competition UT'19 Kaohsiung

Junwoo Jang, Ph.D. student, presented a paper entitled ‘Dynamic grid adaptation for panel-based bathymetric SLAM’, which suggests an algorithm to simultaneously perform underwater navigation and topographical map creation without incorrect update. He awared the excellence prize in student poster in IEEE OES International Symposium UT'19, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Apr. 16-19.

Nov., 28, 2018 MORIN Winter Workshop

MORIN had a winter workshop at Hanwharesort, Daecheon from Nov. 28 to 29. with all lab members. We looked back what we have done in 2018 and discussed about the future works.

Sept., 21, 2018 Ph.D. student Junwoo Jang received Poster Presentation Award 2nd Place in 5th UTokyo-SJTU-KAIST Joint Academic Symposium

Junwoo's work entitled "Panel-Based Bathymetric SLAM with A Single-Beam Acoustic Altimeter" was awarded as 2nd place in The 5th UTokyo-SJTU-KAIST Joint Academic Symposium held in The University of Tokyo Kashiwa Campus, Japan, Sep., 21.

Dec., 15, 2017 Ph.D. Students Jungwook Han and Yonghoon Cho received Best Paper Award at Maritime RobotX Forum

A paper entitled "Coastal SLAM with Marine Radar for USV Operation in GPS-Restricted Situations" was awarded as Best Paper Award from RobotX Forum held in Sydney, Australia December 13-15, 2017.

Sept., 2017 Ph.D. students, Taeyun Kim and Seonghun Hong were selected to participate in OCEANS'17 Student Poster Competition.

Taeyun's work entitled "A novel terrain information measure for terrain-referenced underwater navigation" and Seonghun's work entitled "Development of a hover-capable AUV system for automated visual ship-hull inspection and mapping" were selected to participate in the MTS/IEEE OCEANS'17 Student Poster Competition held in Anchorage, USA, September 18-21. The conference covered their registration fees and all travel expenses during the conference days.

May, 04, 2017 Ph.D. Student Sukmin Yoon received Outstanding Paper Award at Conference of the Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems

A paper entitled "Efficient multi-agent task allocation algorithm considering inactive agents contraints" was awarded as an Outstanding Paper Award from 32th Annual Conference of the Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems held in Sokcho, May 11-13, 2017

Apr., 20, 2017 Ph.D. student Seonghun Hong was awarded the grand prize from KAOSTS Paper Contest

A paper entitled "A Robust loop-closure method for visual SLAM in unstructured seafloor environment" was awarded as the grand prize from Korean Assoication of Ocean Science and Technology Societies (KAOSTS) Paper Contest (Future Ocean Scientist and Engineer Award) held under the joint auspices of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and KAOSTS.

Feb., 24, 2017 Ph.D. Student Taeyun Kim won the 1st prize at UT 2017 student poster presentation competition

Taeyun Kim, Ph.D. student, presented a paper entitled ‘Panel-based bathymetric SLAM with a Multibeam Echosounder’, which is an algorithm to simultaneously perform underwater navigation and topographical map creation by using multibeam echosounder underwater terrain information. He awared the first prize in student poster and received an tablet PC as an additional prize in IEEE OES Internation Symposium UT 2017, Busan, Feb 21-24.

Feb., 7, 2017 Ph.D. Student Jeonghyeon Wang was selected as the winner of the best robot vision paper award in KRoC 2017

A paper entitled "Semantic Segmentation of Urban Scenes using a Relative Location Model" was selected as the winner of an Asian Federation of Computer Vision (AFCV) best robot vision paper award in the 12th Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference (KRoC) held in Pyeongchang, Korea, Feb., 5-8.

Feb., 3, 2017 Ph.D. Student Seonghun Hong was awarded as an Outstanding Student Paper Award from KSOE 2016

A paper entitled "Image mosaicking using pose-assisted registration for visual inspection of underwater structures" was awarded as an Outstanding Student Paper Award from the 30th Anniversary Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Busan, Nov. 17-18, 2016.

Nov., 17, 2016 Master student Dongha Chung was awarded outstanding student paper presentation from KSOE 2016

Master student Dongha Chung was selected as outstanding student paper presentation award in Conference of The Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Busan, Korea, Nov., 17-19. Dongha's work entitled "Attitude Control of an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle using Quaternion Feedback" showed methodology to control the underwater vehicle by using quaternion as state rather than Euler angles to represent the attitude of underwater vehicle. The paper presented at May., 15, 2016, in Busan, Korea.

Apr., 13, 2016 Ph.D. Student Jungwook Han was selected as the winner of the third prize award in OCEANS'16 Student Poster Competition

A paper entitled "Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of a Semi-Submersible Offshore Platform with an Unmanned Surface Vehicle” was selected as the winner of the third prize award for outstanding performance and lasting contribution to the MTS/IEEE OCEANS’16 student poster competition held in Shanghai, China, Apr. 10-13.



Jan., 27, 2016 Ph.D. student Jisung Park was selected as one of Asian Federation of Computer Vision(AFCV) Best Robot Vision Paper Award winners of Korea Robotics Society (KROS) 2016 held in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea

Jisung's work entitled "Model-based pose estimation for underwater autonomous manipulation" showed a new way for high-precise underwater navigation called model-referenced underwater navigation of underwater robot in structured underwater environment. The main idea is that a spatial information with respect to a structured environment is utilized for enabling the underwater robot to navigate by minimizing drift error accumulated in the time arising from sensor biases. For generating the spatial information 3D model-based tracking, which is computer vision algorithm is introduced in the proposed navigation algorithm.



Jan., 26, 2016 Master student Minju Kang is awarded Poster Award from KRoC

Master student Minju Kang was selected as one of four Outstanding Student Poster Award winners of the 11th Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference(KRoC 2016) held in Pyeongchang, Korea, Jan 25-27, 2015. Minju's work entitled "Dynamic Positioning Control of a Twin-hull Unmanned Surface Ship" showed a thrust allocation strategy which can be applied to a dynamically positioned twin-hull vessel.

Oct., 29, 2015 PhD Student Seonghun Hong was awarded the best paper award from JKROS

A paper entitled “Visual SLAM using Local Bundle Optimization in Unstructured Seafloor Environment” was selected the best one of papers published in Journal of Korea Robotics Society in 2014.



May., 7, 2015 Master Student Sungchur Kwon was awarded outstanding poster award from KRoC 2015

Master student Sungchur Kwon was selected as Outstanding Student Poster Award winner of the 10th Korea Robotics Society Annual Conference(KRoC 2015) held in Daejeon, Korea, May, 6~8.



2014
Oct., 26, 2014 RobotX Competition 2nd place

We participated in the 2014 Maritime RobotX Challenge competition which was held from 20th-26th October in 2014 in Marina Bay, Singapore. After a year-long hard work and a week-long fierce competition, we took the second place with an award of S$ 16,500 total. You can find many interesting pictures and videos form the competition.

May., 23, 2014 Master student Jisung Park was selected as one of five Outstanding Student Paper & Presentation Award winners of the 2014 spring conference of The Korean Society of Ocean Engineering held in Busan, Republic of Korea

Jisung's work entitled "A preliminary study on autonomous object detection and retrieval in underwater environment" showed an object recovery task performed by underwater robot. A computer vision technics was only used for navigation and object recognition except for any navigation sensors.

A paper entitled "3D reconstruction of bridge structures by sensor fusion using a USV" was awarded Outstanding Student Paper Award from the 2013 Regular Conference of the Korean Society of Ocean Engineers held in Seoul, Oct. 17-19, 2013.
